Check dryer performance
Notice whether ordinary loads suddenly require more than one cycle. Confirm that the load size and dryer settings are normal before treating a single slow cycle as evidence of a vent problem.
Repeated slow drying, unusually hot clothing, or a hot appliance deserves closer attention.
Check the laundry area
Look behind the dryer for a crushed, sharply bent, or disconnected transition hose. Keep combustible clutter away from the appliance and make sure the dryer has the clearance recommended by its manufacturer.
Do not pull or disconnect components unless you can do so safely and know how they should be restored.
Check the exterior termination
With the dryer operating normally, the exterior flap should open and exhaust should be noticeable. Lint collecting around the hood or a flap that barely moves can indicate restriction.
Never reach into a roof termination or another unsafe location. Leave inaccessible points to a professional.
Know when professional service is appropriate
Schedule an inspection when several warning signs appear, when the vent run is long or difficult to access, or when the maintenance history is unknown. Stop using the dryer if there is a burning smell.
